May 16 – 22 Canada Road Safety Week. Transportation Canada's vision is to make our roads the safest in the world by 2010, but a quick look around their website reveals that they are talking about making the roads safe for those who drive cars, not bicycles.
With gas prices soaring, more people are choosing two wheels instead of four. So what can those of us who choose pedal power do to ensure our safety?
First and foremost, we need to act like we are vehicles, because we are. The City of Brandon Bicycle Bylaw (Pt III, Sec 6.2: pg 20) and Fines (Pt V, Sec. 56.2: pg 60) are available online. If we behave like cars, it helps other drivers know what to expect of us. Don’t ride facing into traffic. Use signals. Stop at stop signs. Stay in your lane. And don’t let road rage get the best of you!
The rest of it is stuff you already know. Be visible. Wear a helmet. Don't wear headphones. Don't talk on your cell phone (?!?). Okay, I'll stop lecturing.
