Bill to Ban Non-Essential Use of Pesticides

Winnipeg M.P. Pat Martin tabled a bill in the House of Commons calling for a nationwide ban on all cosmetic used of pesticides and herbicides. He cited the growing list of neurological diseases, cancers and reproductive disorders found in the population, particularly in children and pregnant women. The bill would place the onus on the chemical companies to prove that their products are safe before they would be allowed back on store shelves, rather than government and health officials having to prove they are harmful before they are removed.

Ninety municipalities throughout Canada, including all of Quebec, have banned the cosmetic use of pesticides. Brandon is the only city in Manitoba to have done so.

The bill does not ban pesticides for agricultural or commercial use, but if the bill is implemented, Martin says it would reduce overall pesticide use by 40%.
